A retro, ultra-rich cake with a buttery crust and gooey cream cheese topping — made with boxed cake mix and pantry staples.

Ingredients

Bottom Layer:

  • 1 box yellow cake mix

  • ½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted

  • 1 large egg

Topping:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • to 4 cups powdered sugar

  • Optional: ½ cup chopped pecans or coconut

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch pan.

  • Mix cake mix, melted butter, and egg. Press into bottom of pan.

  • In a bowl, beat cream cheese, eggs, vanilla, and powdered sugar until smooth.

  • Pour topping over crust. Bake 40–45 minutes, until edges are golden and center is slightly set.

  • Cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar and slice

Notes

  • Store in the fridge. Best served slightly chilled.

  • Try different cake mix flavors for variation.

  • Add nuts or chips to the topping for texture.
