1¾ cups all-purpose flour
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups granulated sugar
1½ tsp baking powder
1½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
2 large eggs
1 cup milk or buttermilk
½ cup vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup hot water or hot coffee
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line a 9×13-inch pan or two 8-inch pans.
In a large bowl, whisk flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
Stir in hot water or coffee. Batter will be thin.
Pour into pan(s) and bake 30–40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool completely before frosting.
Use buttermilk for extra tenderness.
Make cupcakes by baking 18–20 minutes.
Frost with ganache, buttercream, or whipped cream.
