A moist, rich, and easy chocolate cake made in one bowl with pantry staples. Perfect for any occasion — no mixer needed!

Ingredients

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 1½ tsp baking powder

  • 1½ tsp baking soda

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup hot water or hot coffee

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line a 9×13-inch pan or two 8-inch pans.

  • In a large bowl, whisk flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  • Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.

  • Stir in hot water or coffee. Batter will be thin.

  • Pour into pan(s) and bake 30–40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

  • Cool completely before frosting.

Notes

  • Use buttermilk for extra tenderness.

  • Make cupcakes by baking 18–20 minutes.

  • Frost with ganache, buttercream, or whipped cream.
