A soft, buttery coffee cake spiced with cardamom and topped with a cinnamon-cardamom streusel. Perfect with coffee or tea for breakfast, brunch, or an afternoon treat.

Ingredients

Cake:

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1½ tsp ground cardamom

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temp

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt

  • ¼ cup milk

Streusel:

  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup brown sugar

  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  • ½ tsp cardamom

  • 3 tbsp cold butter, cubed

  • (Optional) ¼ cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line an 8×8-inch pan.

  • Mix streusel ingredients until crumbly. Chill.

  • Whisk dry cake ingredients in a bowl.

  • In another bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs, vanilla, sour cream, and milk.

  • Stir in dry ingredients until just combined.

  • Spread batter into pan and sprinkle with streusel.

  • Bake 35–42 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Notes

  • Add orange zest for a bright flavor twist.

  • Serve warm or at room temperature.

  • Freezes well for up to 2 months.
